- Pali : bojjhanga, sambojjhanga
The Seven Factors of Awakening are:
- Mindfulness (Pali: sati) i.e. to be aware and mindful in all activities and movements both physical and mental.
- Investigation (Pali: dhamma-vicaya) into the true nature of the Dharma.
- Energy (Pali: viriya)
- Joy (Pali: piti)
- Relaxation (Pali: passaddhi) of both body and mind.
- Concentration (Pali: samadhi)
- Equanimity (Pali: upekkha), to be able to face life in all its vicissitudes with calm of mind and tranquillity, without disturbance.
In the Bojjhanga Sutta, once when the Buddha was gravely ill he asked Ven. Mahacunda to recite the Seven Factors of Awakening to him. In such a way the Buddha was cured of his illness.
