Buddhist Film Society, Inc. (BFS) is an independent not-for-profit resource for audiences, educators and filmmakers, committed to presenting, archiving, translating, subtitling and preserving Buddhist-themed and Buddhist-inspired cinema of all kinds.

Many of these works will be seen in this country for the first time as part of Buddhist Film Society events including International Buddhist Film Festival presentations; museum, high school and college screenings; television broadcasts and community organization outreach programs. Building new audiences for these films is a major objective.

Mission

Buddhist Film Society has a three-fold mission: exhibition of film and video works—to use cinema to foster communication about Buddhist ideas to the widest possible cross section of American society; education—to provide a comprehensive, accessible resource for teachers, filmmakers, funders and diverse audiences; and production—to promote and facilitate quality independent filmmaking in this arena.

The International Buddhist Film Festival Program

The IBFF exhibition program is the key component of Buddhist Film Society’s effort to serve diverse local, regional, national and international audiences, educators and filmmakers. BFS joins with local institutional presenting partners including museums, film societies, colleges/universities and community organizations to create unique film festivals in a variety of venues throughout the year. (see Events)

Education

International Buddhist Film Festivals also offer lectures, panel discussions and presentations. These utilize the participation of IBFF filmmakers and other experts from the local area plus those from around the world who are in attendance. In audience development programs, these filmmakers, authors, scholars, performers and teachers will foster dialogue and help integrate Buddhist perspectives into everyday life. BFS engages and collaborates with the extraordinary range of Buddhist teachers, study groups and related organizations around the world.

Funding

BFS is funded by a combination of earned income (from ticket sales, retail merchandise sales and membership fees) and contributed funds (from individual donors, private and public foundations, and corporate charitable giving programs). Sponsorship participation is available for all IBFF events.
