| evam me sutrang | Thus have I heard. |
| ekang samayang bhagavar | One the Buddha |
| baranasi-yang vihara-ti isipatane migadaye | was near Benares, at Isipatana, in the Deer Park. |
| tatra kho bhagavar panca-vagniye bhikkhu aman-tesi | Then the Buddha addressed the company of 5 Bikkhus: |
| dve-me bhikkha-ve antar parvaji-tena na sevi-tarvar | "Bikkhus, these two extremes should not be followed by one who has gone out from home. |

| kamesu kama-sukha-li-kanu-yogo hino gammo pothu-dyani-ko | pleasure of sense, which is low, vulgar, worldly, |
| anariyo anatmha-sanhito | unworthy and harmful to oneself. |

| atma-kila-mathanu-yogo duhkho | self-mortification which is painful, |
| anari-yo anattha-sanhito | unworthy and harmful to oneself. |
| ete te bhikkha-ve ubho | By avoiding these two extremes, Oh Bhikkhus, |
| ante anu-pagamma madhyama-prati-patta tatha-gate-na | the Tathagata has found out that middle path |
| abhi-sam-buddha caksu-karani nyana-karani upasa-maya | which giveth wision, which giveth knowledge, which tends to peace, |
| abhi-nyaya sam-boddha-ya nirvana-ya sangvat-tati | higher wisdom, enlightnment and nirvana. |
| kata-ma ca sar bhikkha-ve madhyama-prati-patta tatha-gate-na | And what, Oh Bikkhus, is that middle path which is found by the Thatagata |
| abhi-sam-buddha caksu-karani nyana-karani upasa-maya | which giveth wision, which giveth knowledge, which tends to peace, |
| abhi-nyaya sam-boddha-ya nirvana-ya sangvat-tati | higher wisdom, enlightnment and nirvana? |
