Singapore Soka Association
From Buddhist Encyclopedia
Singapore Soka Association (SSA) is a Buddhist organisation established to promote understanding and practice of Buddhism. SSA was officially registered in 1972 with the Registry of Societies.
The philosophical base of the organisation's practice is Nichiren Buddhism, a School of the Mahayana tradition. Nichiren Buddhist philosophy teaches that every individual has the potential to become enlightened in his or her lifetime. Each person has within, the power to overcome life's challenges, to live a life of value and be a positive influence in one's community, society and the world. Nichiren Buddhism is derived from the Lotus Sutra, the epitome teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha that affirms the universal Buddha nature in all people.
Soka in Japanese means value creation. It describes the core spirit that each individual has capacity to develop his or her full human potential. Buddhism is expressed as a religion of self-empowerment when the principle of value-creation is practised and applied fully in one's daily life.
SSA is part of an international network of Soka affiliated organizations under the Soka Gakkai International movement.
